Conversations
with an
amazingly successful gambler (Part
2)
During
the first months of collecting data, the Pelayo family never played
when they entered the casino; their only purpose was to collect data
for their statistical analysis. After the first phase had ended,
however, and they had their results, they knew what they had to do:
continue to return to the casino every day, all day, but this time,
they would be playing… and playing… and
playing…
They would, of course, be playing the number
seven, at the wheel that, according to their study, was unbalanced.
They played thousands of spins over the weeks, always playing that
number. And they won.
They won so many thousands of dollars, in fact,
that the casino was not at all pleased. The management wasn’t
sure how they were doing it, but knew that this wasn’t just
“luck”. They tried to forbid the family entrance,
yet Gonzalo went to court, and won: a casino does not have the right to
prohibit you from entering just because you are winning (unless, of
course, they caught you cheating, which was not the case).
So the Pelayos kept winning… until the
casino adopted a more sinister approach: suspecting that the family may
be winning due to an imbalance in the wheel, they changed the wheel,
re-positioning the numbers in relation to the base of the wheel. Thus,
in order for the Pelayos to keep winning, they would have to start
their statistical study from the beginning, to see which number was now
favored on the wheel.
A court ruled that the casino could not use such a
procedure, since the roulette wheels may not in any way be manipulated
by the casino. True, in this case, the casino was not trying to obtain
specific results on that wheel; they merely wanted the results to be
mere chance. Nonetheless, the law is the law.
The Pelayos, meanwhile, decided it was time to use
their strategy elsewhere. They started to travel to different places
within Spain, and also to different countries. At each casino, they
would spend a couple of months collecting results, then do their study
to find the unbalanced wheels, and only then start to play.
One can only imagine how stressful such a life
would be: spending endless hours in the casino, playing hundreds of
times a day, always playing the same game, the same number…
but it paid off.
True, they had their problems: one casino in
Italy, most likely Mafia-run, simply threatened them; they decided it
would be best to go elsewhere. In Las Vegas, the casino where they were
playing kept an uncomfortably close eye on them; so much so, that they
also began to fear for their safety.
But after two years, they had amassed 2 million
dollars. Deciding that the lifestyle was simply too stressful, they
then thought it best to retire from roulette. Gonzalo’s son,
Ivan, opened an entertainment business in Madrid with his share of the
winnings; Gonzalo himself continued with certain gambling projects,
though roulette was not involved in any of them.
In this real-life example, we see how one group of
people “beat the odds” in a way, though in fact,
the odds at that table were really with, not against them, since they
had discovered that the wheel was imbalanced, and would give a
“7” more often than it normally should.
There are other gamblers in the world who also end
up in the elite group of “winners”, even over long
stretches of time. How do they do it?
Well, I don’t think that many of them
use the “Pelayo method”, for few are the people who
would be willing to spend months collecting data before they even began
to play. Yet suppose a certain roulette player in Madrid, back before
the Pelayos started playing, had had a “hunch”
about a certain number... and suppose that he also had a
“hunch” about a certain wheel… and
suppose he then begins to play that number at that wheel.. and further
suppose that the number he favors is 7, and the wheel he chooses just
happens to be the one the Pelayos will soon discover to be imbalanced...
You see what I’m getting at: in such a
case, that other gambler would have won big, too, though he would have
had no idea that the wheel was imbalanced. His intuition (or whatever
you want to call it) would have led him the right wheel, and the right
number… he would have simply been
“lucky”.
Though such things no doubt do happen, intuition
is a slippery advisor: how can we know that that little voice inside us
is leading us in the right direction? True, some people no doubt have a
more reliable sense of intuition than others, but even those lucky
ones, if they are under emotional stress, for example, will not always
be able to count on their gift to give positive results.
What other possibilities could there be that would
give the gambler a better chance of being one of those few players who
wins more than he loses over time?
It is my conviction that astrology may provide an
answer here. Before I continue, let me make it totally clear that I am
not talking about “newspaper astrology”, otherwise
known as “sun sign astrology”. Such nonsense
– and yes, I don’t hesitate to call it that
– will get you nowhere as far as your search for luck is
concerned, or in other area either, for that matter.
True astrology is not only based on a
person’s sun sign, but on the entirety of his natal (birth)
chart, a map of the planetary calculations at his/her birth, and based
on the date, exact time and place of birth.
You see, it can never happen that “all
Libras”, for instance, have a lucky day. Some will, some
won’t; some will have an average day, others a fantastic one;
others will drop dead. Yet if we know exactly what kind of Libra we are
dealing with – the exact degree of his sun, the exact
positions of the Moon and planets in his chart, their angular
relationships to one another, and their positions relative to the birth
place – then we can indeed make predictions as to whether
this particular Libra will have a good or bad day. Only this type of
astrology – what I call “real” or
“true” astrology, could ever have a chance of
making reliable predictions about someone’s future.
This is done by comparing the birth chart of an
individual to the planetary positions at the present moment: evaluating
the angles formed between birth positions and present ones, above all.
Not that this is simple: in order to calculate everything, you need a
specially-made software program, but even that isn’t enough:
you must also know how to prepare the program so that the results it
calculates show the most favorable/unfavorable times. And to know this,
a lot of experience with astrology is necessary, most particularly in
the area of the search for luck.
Having spent years in this quest, I have been able
to create a program that does exactly that: using a very large number
of variables (including some that no other astrology program in the
world has, to my knowledge), it calculates the times when you can
expect to have either “good” or
“bad” luck. Not that the predictions it gives you
are 100% reliable: this is impossible, and don’t let anyone
tell you otherwise!
Yet 100% accuracy is not necessary if we wish to
come out ahead when speculating, or gambling. All we must do is improve
the probability of winning, so that in the end, we end up in that elite
group of players who win more than they lose.
The good thing about using astrology is that it is
not “intuitive”, and is therefore not influenced
directly by emotional states, as is intuition, for instance. If you
have an aspect of Saturn to your Sun right now, for example, that fact
will not be changed simply because you feel a certain way. Quite the
contrary: you will probably feel a certain way because that aspect is
present. Therefore if, your emotional state can have a possible
influence on your “luck” (as is suggested in this
article), then by using
astrology, we can determine when it is most
probable that we will be in a certain emotional state (whether positive
or negative) and choose when to speculate/gamble, and when not to do so.
Of course, the results might not be due to
emotion: it is also possible that planetary aspects are rather a direct
reflection of “luck”, a reflection that somehow
then affects our emotions – but I see no need to theorize
excessively. In the end, all that matters for the investor, or the
gambler, are the results. And to know whether it is indeed possible for
astrology to help you in your financial enterprises, there is only one
way to find out: try it and see!
Now, let me make it clear that there is no need to
believe in astrology. Gonzalo García Pelayo serves here as a
refreshing example. When I first visited him 15 years ago, I did so
with the intention of asking him whether we might try an experiment,
using astrology: I would tell him when it is best to play, he would
play on the dates I suggested, and after a few months, we would compare
the results to those he had had previously.
His answer was quite interesting:
“David, let me tell you from the beginning that I
don’t believe in astrology. But that doesn’t
matter. I have an open mind. Sure we can try it out! All that matters
in the end is if we can improve our results or not. If astrology
“works” in that respect, I’ll have no
problem changing my opinion about it.”
That is truly an example of scientific thinking:
reserve judgment on something until you have tried it out. How I wish
more people were that open-minded!
At the time, I still had not developed the
software necessary for a collaboration with Gonzalo; it took me and a
programmer friend several years to develop the tools we’d
need for such a task. And when we finally had the program, Gonzalo had
stopped playing roulette, so we never were able to commence our
project. Nonetheless, I am still determined to experiment, and that is
why I created the site you are visiting right now.
